Why Taurine Matters
The nutrient your cat
can't make themselves.
Taurine is an amino acid that cats need to survive — officially recognized as an essential nutrient for cats because, unlike most animals, their bodies simply cannot produce it. Every drop has to come from what they eat.
Without enough taurine, cats can develop serious heart problems (dilated cardiomyopathy), gradual vision loss, and a weakened immune system. The scary part? These conditions develop slowly and silently. By the time symptoms appear, damage is already done.
Most commercial treats are so processed that the taurine that was naturally in the meat gets destroyed. Some add a little back. Very few add enough.

Taurine regulates calcium flow inside heart muscle cells — the mechanism behind each heartbeat's force and timing. Without it, the heart gradually loses pumping efficiency and the chambers enlarge to compensate. This condition is largely preventable with consistent taurine intake.
Retina and vision
Taurine is so concentrated in the feline retina that it makes up roughly half of all the free amino acids there. It protects the light-sensing cells from oxidative damage as they work — a demanding, continuous job. Once these cells are lost, they cannot regenerate. Prevention is the only treatment.
Brain and nervous system
In kittens, taurine is essential during the critical window of brain and nervous system development. Kittens born to taurine-deficient mothers can show developmental delays and neurological abnormalities. For adult cats, taurine supports normal nervous system function and has a protective role in brain cell health.
Immune function
Taurine plays a direct role in immune cell function — it helps white blood cells respond to infection more effectively and modulates the inflammatory response so it doesn't become excessive. Cats with chronically low taurine levels tend to have a less effective immune response, making them slower to recover from illness.
Why many cat sticks still fall short
Taurine occurs naturally in meat — especially in organ tissue and muscle. But the heat, extrusion, and processing common in cat stick production can be rough on heat-sensitive amino acids. Even products made with real meat can end up with far less taurine than the raw ingredient started with.
The result is that many commercial cat sticks contribute very little meaningful taurine to your cat's daily intake — even the ones with "real chicken" on the front of the pack. Some brands add taurine back, but in amounts that look better on a label than they do in a bowl.
Heat destroys taurine
Many cat sticks are baked, extruded, or cooked at high temperatures. This significantly degrades the taurine that was naturally in the meat before processing.
Low-quality protein sources
Many cat sticks use meat by-products or meal — ingredients that start with lower taurine concentrations than whole muscle meat, then lose even more through processing.
Token amounts added back
Brands that do add supplemental taurine often add just enough to put it on the label. The amount may be meaningful on paper but fall well below what cats actually benefit from.
Why we refuse to make this just a treat
Once a cat stick is treated like a snack, daily nutrition starts getting diluted.
Most people are not trying to feed badly. The problem is that the category has spent years teaching cat owners to see sticks as casual little rewards: tasty is enough, convenient is enough, just a few here and there is enough. But once something shows up every day, it is already shaping the overall diet.
That is our point of view in one line: if a cat stick is going to appear this often, it should carry the standard of a main meal. We'd rather make it harder on ourselves than keep making something that only needs to taste good.
Snacks expand fast
The easier something is to feed and the more your cat asks for it, the faster "just a treat" becomes part of the daily routine.
Snacks crowd out real food
For cats with smaller appetites, every extra snack takes space away from the complete food that was supposed to carry the day.
High frequency deserves a higher standard
If cat sticks are naturally going to be used often, then they should be built to stand up to that frequency instead of leaning on "occasional use" as an excuse.
