What is taurine, exactly?

Taurine is a type of amino acid — but not quite like the ones that build proteins. It is what chemists call a "conditionally essential" amino acid in most animals, meaning most species can synthesize it internally when needed. In cats, that synthesis pathway is almost entirely absent. This makes taurine absolutely essential in the feline diet.

It is found naturally in animal-based proteins — heart muscle, liver, and seafood all contain significant amounts. This is why cats evolved as obligate carnivores: their biology assumed a diet rich in animal tissue, which reliably supplied the taurine their bodies could not manufacture.

In the modern world, cats eat commercial food. And the processing methods used to produce kibble and wet food — including heat, extrusion, and long shelf-life formulation — destroy much of the naturally occurring taurine in ingredients. Manufacturers are required to add taurine back in, but the amounts added often hover near the minimum needed for survival rather than the levels needed for long-term health.

Key fact: Cats are one of the very few mammals that cannot synthesize taurine from other amino acids. This is a fixed biological characteristic — it does not change with diet, age, or supplementation of other nutrients.

What happens when cats don't get enough taurine?

Taurine deficiency does not happen overnight. It builds slowly over weeks and months as body stores deplete. By the time symptoms become visible, significant damage has often already occurred. This is one of the reasons routine health monitoring matters so much for cats — deficiency can be invisible for a long time.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)

This is the most serious consequence of taurine deficiency and one of the most well-documented in veterinary literature. Taurine is essential for normal heart muscle function. Without enough of it, the heart muscle weakens and the chambers of the heart begin to dilate. The heart becomes less able to pump blood efficiently, leading to congestive heart failure.

DCM was extremely common in cats before the link to taurine was discovered in the 1980s. Once commercial cat food manufacturers began adding taurine to their formulas, rates dropped sharply. But the problem never went away entirely — and in cats fed diets low in taurine, including some homemade diets and many commercial treats, deficiency continues to occur.

The retina — the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye — has an unusually high concentration of taurine. It is one of the tissues most sensitive to taurine status. When taurine falls short, retinal cells begin to degenerate. The central retina is affected first, creating a characteristic "bull's-eye" lesion visible on examination.

Unlike DCM, retinal damage caused by taurine deficiency is not reversible. Once photoreceptor cells die, they do not regenerate. This makes prevention far more important than treatment. A cat with chronic taurine deficiency may become partially or fully blind before the cause is identified.

Reproductive and developmental problems

Queens fed taurine-deficient diets may have higher rates of miscarriage, smaller litters, and kittens born with developmental abnormalities. Taurine is secreted in cat's milk — if the mother's levels are low, kittens receive inadequate amounts during a period when the brain and eyes are rapidly developing.

Immune function

Lower taurine levels are associated with reduced immune response. This is less studied in cats than the cardiac and vision effects, but the role of taurine in immune cell function is well-established in research. Cats with marginal taurine intake may be more susceptible to infections and recover more slowly from illness.

How much taurine does a cat need daily?

Taurine levels can be measured through a simple blood test. Whole blood taurine is the most reliable marker — plasma taurine can fluctuate significantly based on recent food intake, while whole blood levels reflect longer-term status more accurately.

If your vet suspects taurine deficiency — particularly in a cat showing signs of heart disease or vision changes — a whole blood taurine level is a reasonable first step. Levels below 200 nmol/mL in whole blood are generally considered deficient. Ideal levels are typically above 300 nmol/mL.

Regular wellness visits that include cardiac assessment are the best way to catch early signs before they become serious problems. An echocardiogram can detect cardiac changes before they cause symptoms.

Should you supplement your cat's taurine intake?

For most cats eating a complete and balanced commercial diet from a reputable manufacturer, additional taurine supplementation is not necessary. The diet should already meet minimum requirements.
